Mary McLeod Bethune

Mary McLeod Bethune opened her first school for African-American students in Daytona Beach, Florida today in 1904.

Ruth Muskrat Bronson, a Cherokee poet, educator and Indian rights activist, was born today in 1897. After completing her education, Bronson became the first Guidance and Placement Officer of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
