Belva Lockwood, an attorney, politician, educator, and author, was born today in 1830. She was the first woman admitted to practice law before Supreme Court, and ran for U.S. President in 1884 and 1888.
Marjorie Joyner is an American businesswoman, hair care entrepreneur, philanthropist, educator and activist who is noted for being the first African-American woman to create and patent a permanent hair-wave machine. She helped develop and manage more than 200 Madam C. J. Walker beauty schools by 1919 and also worked with Eleanor Roosevelt and other leaders in civil rights struggles. She was born today in 1896.
