Today in 1983, Dr. Barbara McClintock received the Nobel Prize for Medicine for her discovery in genetics about mobile genetic elements.

Helen Hayes, an American actress whose career spanned 80 years, was born today in 1900. She eventually received the nickname "First Lady of American Theatre" and was one of 16 people who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award.

Dorothy Celeste Boulding Ferebee, a physician, educator, and social activist, was born today in 1898. She led efforts to improve the health care of African Americans and fought to lower the mortality rate among African Americans in southern rural communities.
