Patricia Era Bath

Patricia Era Bath, an ophthalmologist and inventor, was born today in 1942.  Her invention of the Laserphaco Probe was an important milestone in the advent of laser cataract surgery. Bath also co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness committed to “protect, preserve, and restore sight.”


Victoria Soto

Victoria Soto was hailed as a heroine after she died protecting her young students during the Newton, CT shootings on December 14, 2012. President Barack Obama awarded Soto the Presidential Citizens Medal, describing her as a selfless and courageous woman who “inspire[s] us all to look for opportunities to better serve our communities and our country.” She was born today in 1985.
