Yoshiko Uchida, author of more than 30 books dealing with the Japanese-American experience, was born today in 1921.

Lucy Covington, a Native American tribal leader and political activist, was born today in 1910. Covington worked to protect tribal rights and resources, develop tribal services, govern the reservation for the benefit of tribe members, and promote inter-tribal cooperation.
