Vera Weisbord, a radical activist, labor organizer, and feminist, was born today in 1895. She organized the women textile worker strikes in the 1920s and was active in the Civil Rights Movement.
Donna Allen
Donna Allen, the founder of the Women’s Institute for Freedom of the Press, was born today in 1920. She founded the Institute in 1972 to publicize and research women’s issues which she thought were ignored by the main stream media.
Renée Richards, an American ophthalmologist and former tennis player, was born today in 1934. She became widely known following male-to-female sex reassignment surgery, when she fought to compete as a woman in the 1976 US Open.
