Martha Graham, a modern dance innovator and choreographer and first dancer to perform at the White House, was born today in 1894. She received the highest civilian award of the US: the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction.
Ethel Weed, a military officer in the Women’s Army Corp., was born in 1906. She later promoted women’s rights and suffrage in Japan.
