Louise Bowen, a Chicago philanthropist, was born today in 1859. She financially saved the Hull House in 1935 and funded the Woman’s Club building. She obtained minimum wage for women at International Harvester Company and raised $12,000 for families of strikers.
Wilma Heide
Wilma Heide, educator and women’s studies pioneer, was born today in 1921. She served as president of National Organization for Women from 1971-72, and spearheaded sex discrimination charges against AT&T.
Today in 1944, Sue Dauser, Director of the Navy Nurse Corps, became the first female Captain in the U.S. Navy.
