Writer Octavia R. Albert was born today in 1853. Her book The House of Bondage consists of seven slave narratives collected by Albert who was herself a former slave.

Marsha Gomez, an activist who used pottery and sculpture from her Choctaw ancestry to demand rights for indigenous women of many cultures, was born today in 1951.
