Educator Marva Collins was born today in 1936 in Atmore, Alabama. She is famous for applying classical education successfully with lower-income students, many of whom had been wrongly labelled as 'learning-disabled' by public schools.


Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin

Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin was born today in 1842. She was a publisher, journalist, suffragist, civil rights activist, and editor of Women’s Era, first newspaper published by and for African-American women. She also founded the National Federation of Afro-American Women and the Women’s Era Club.
