Luisa Moreno
Luisa Moreno, a labor leader and Mexican-American civil rights activist, was born today in 1907. She helped organize “El Congreso del Pueblo de Habla Espanola” (Spanish-Speaking Peoples Congress) in 1938, and worked for the United Cannery, Agricultural, Packing, and Allied Workers of America (UCAPAWA).
Constance Baker Motley
Constance Baker Motley was confirmed as U.S. district judge today in 1966, becoming the first Black woman on the federal bench. She was also first African American woman elected to the New York State Senate in 1964.
