Sybil Ludington

Today in 1777, American Revolution heroine Sybil Ludington -- who was just 16 years old at the time -- rode 40 miles on horseback in the middle of the night to warn the American militia that the British were invading.


Anita Loos

Anita Loos, a novelist and screenwriter, was born today in 1888. She wrote “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” (1925), as well as screenplays for Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Clark Gable and Jean Harlow. 


Julia Godman Ruuttila

Julia Godman Ruuttila, a union recruiter, activist and journalist, was born today in 1907. She worked for the CIO’s International Woodworkers of America during the eight-and-a-half-month lock-out in 1937, raised community support, protested the Vietnam War -- and still walked in picket lines at age 80. 


Carol Burnett, a popular actress, comedian, singer, and writer with a 50-year career in television, was born today in 1933.
