Dorothy Maynor, an operatic soprano who sang German lieder as well as spirituals, was born today in 1910. She sang at the inaugurations of Presidents Truman and Eisenhower. 


Dixy Lee Ray

Dixy Lee Ray, a marine biologist whose scientific papers and research on marine invertebrates led to public television programs, was born today in 1914. She was appointed to the Atomic Energy Commission and elected as Governor of Washington in 1976.


Marguerite Higgins

Marguerite Higgins, the first woman to win Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting, was born today in 1920.
