Sarah Grimké

Sarah Grimké, outspoken abolitionist and influential women’s rights pioneer, was born today in 1792. She wrote “Epistle to the Clergy of the Southern States” in 1836 refuting Biblical scripture that justified slavery as well as “Letters on the Equality of the Sexes, and the Condition of Woman."


Singer Tina Turner (born Anna Mae Bullock) has been acknowledged as one of the world's most popular and biggest-selling music artists of all time and is the most successful female rock artist of all time with record sales in excess of 180 million. She was born today in 1941.

Mary Walker

Mary Walker, a women’s rights advocate who adopted the “Bloomer” dress reform in 1850s, was born today in 1832. She won the Congressional Medal of Honor for services in the Civil War including treating patients in the South.
