Elizabeth Britton, a botanist who took the lead in advocating for the establishment of the New York Botanical Garden, and founded the Wild Flower Preservation Society of America, was born in 1858.


FELISA RINCON DE GAUTIER

Felisa Rincon De Gautier was born today in 1897. She was appointed Mayor of San Juan in 1946 and was so loved, she was re-elected to the post four times. She was well-known for her work creating elder-care centers, distributing clothes and food to those in need, and encouraging women to participate in the economy.


Rigoberta Menchú Tum is a K'iche' political and human rights activist from Guatemala who was born in 1959.  She is an activist who has dedicated her life to helping the world recognize the plight of Guatemala’s indigenous peoples during and after the Guatemalan Civil War.
