Amy Tan, novelist, was born today in 1952. She wrote The Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God’s Wife, and The Bonesetter’s Daughter, among others.


On this date in 1871, Lugenia Burns, later Lugenia Burns Hope, was born. She would go on to become a social reformer whose work helped set the stage for the US civil rights movement.
